BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PRESENTATION: This presentation will describe Arapaho language, history and culture in northern Colorado in pre-settlement times, the history of tribal removal, and the sometimes surprising ways in which the Arapaho are returning to Colorado over the last few years, with the help of many local people, and developing new relationships. The speaker has been involved in assisting with Arapaho language revitalization efforts, in particular, and speaks Arapaho himself.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY: Andrew Cowell is a Professor of Linguistics and Director of the Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies (CNAIS) at CU. He works in the areas of linguistic anthropology and language documentation, focusing on Native and Indigenous languages. He has worked especially closely with the Arapaho people. He has published numerous articles and books on Arapaho language and culture, as well as developing curricular materials and websites for language revitalization documentation.
